The excursions in detail
1st day
Afternoon excursion: boat trip from Obertraun to Hallstatt (Hallstatt-Market).
Then visit to Hallstatt, circular route with churches and ossuary, „Höhenweg“, old town...
Return by shared taxi (inexpensive).
[The return trip by boat would not have suited the timing.]
General information (concerning cable cars, boats, buses, etc.):
The times are (at least in the off-season) not reliably given
for either means of transport or tourist facilities.
You can't rely on the company's own website either.
The posted timetables also deviate from reality.
There are always excuses for changing operating times
(in high season only, on Sundays only, not weekends, school holidays...)
Even guidebooks are incorrect: they warn to be careful,
not the last descent to miss. But that's not really a problem,
because in this specific case it runs until 7 p.m. anyway.
The problem is, however, if you save the cave visit until the afternoon,
when the cave is already closed...
You should also specifically ask about the opening times of the restaurants on the mountain.
2nd day
Excursion to Krippenstein Cable car to the Krippenstein (all sections)
1st section: Obertraun - Schönbergalm
We decided to do both cave visits first thing in the morning.
ATTENTION: The time required for the way to the cave must be considered:
approx. 15 minutes to each cave. Tour lasts 45 minutes. Registration required at the Schönbergalm station. The ascent to the
ice cave is also steep (nevertheless doable, even handicapped accessible. [Although many steps inside the caves])
Ice cave: imposing, but a bit kitschy
Lighting effects, classical background music (Richard Wagner)
Mammoth Cave: More seriously designed, but still impressive.
2nd section: Schönbergalm - mountain station Krippenstein
A walk not to be missed. Via the lodge (inn) to the World Heritage spiral (built at an ideal vantage point)
and then on to the 5 fingers (5-part vantage platform).
The walk is not long, but you should plan several times more time if you want
to enjoy the many views and maybe even take pictures.
3rd section: mountain station Krippenstein - Gjaid
A short walk to the Gjaidalm. Idyllically located in the valley basin.
If you left too late, you could possibly do without the 3rd section.
3rd day
Excursion Zwieselalm / Gosausee
With the Gosaukammtalbahn to the mountain station. From there hike to the Zwieselalm.
We walked the entire path marked on the map, but you should definitely
walk as far as the Gosauerplatzerl.
Then hike along the Gosau lakes. The path to the Gosaulacke
and the rear Gosausee is uphill, but you should definitely circle the front one.
Explore lakes with a rental bike:
The bike rentals in Gosau offer electric bikes only (perhaps we overlooked a provider),
whereby the rental of 3 bikes for one day already exceeds the rental car price.
IMPORTANT: The most beautiful part of the shore can only be explored on foot (biking prohibited)
4th day
Excursion Roundtrip Obertraun
A really nice hike around Obertraun. The most beautiful corners
are the paths along the Traun and the Koppenbrüllerlackn.
The detour to the Wasserfallwand is less worthwhile (small trickle)
5th day
Excursion Hallstatt - Wildbachstrub A hike not to be missed.
Highlights: Wildbachstrub (important: go all the way to the back) and Gletschergarten
The best way to start is to walk along the Echerntalweg
(you pass the Schleierfall, but it has little water), the return
route then leads via the more beautiful Malerweg.
Arriving by bus:
Because of misinformation (alleged lack of parking spaces in Hallstatt),
we took the bus. One bus was canceled due to the season (see note above),
so we had to wait for the next one. On the way back, the bus was there,
but was shortened (= walk 2 stations)
There would always have been sufficient parking spaces in the
parking spaces in the guidance system. The free car park at the
Schleierfall (see map) is sure to be full in high season.
An interesting variant (steep and narrow): behind the waterfall over the
Gängsteig to the bridge over the Wildbachstrub, then descend over the Gletschergarten.
Excursion salt mine
Then a ride on the funicular to the salt mine with a guided tour of almost 2 hours.
Alternatively, you could also go from the center of Hallstatt via the
serpentine path to the mine. It was too late for us and we only managed to get the penultimate lead.
6th day
Excursion to Grundlsee | Toplitzsee
A boat trip across the Grundlsee should be done when the weather is reasonably nice.
The reflections in the lake are really unique. Then we hiked from Göß to the Toplitzsee
(all roads lead there). The most beautiful is the path along the Toplitzbach.
There is also boat traffic on the Toplitzsee, but with a small uncovered boat.
We didn't go because of a possible thunderstorm.
